Markham FD responds to 101 fires in 2017

Markham Fire Department responded to 212 calls in 2017 - 33.3 percent less than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Markham included 101 fires - 67 structure fires, 22 vehicle fires and 12 other fires.

In all, the department saw $565,050 in fire loss - or about $5,595 per fire.

The department also received 111 false calls, including six malicious calls and 105 other false calls.

The calls resulted in one civilian fire-related death.

The Markham Firefighters Pension Fund, which has 17 active employees and five retired or inactive employees, was $138,193 in debt as of April 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $1,016 for every fire in 2016.
