Shooting at Evergreen Park Walmart leads to attempted murder charge

On October 15, 2025, the Evergreen Park Police Department responded to a report of an active shooter at the Walmart located at 2500 W. 95th Street. Officers arrived at the scene around 2:56 p.m., assisted by surrounding agencies, and cleared the store. They found two victims with gunshot wounds.

A 23-year-old man suffered multiple gunshots to his leg and was transported to Christ Hospital. His condition was not disclosed. A 70-year-old woman was also taken to Christ Hospital after being shot in the foot and was reported in good condition.

According to police, the male victim was walking into the store when a suspect exited a vehicle and chased him while firing shots. The suspect had arrived in a gray Hyundai, which left the area as the suspect fled on foot. Witnesses provided information about the suspect’s last known direction.

Officers searched the area and located the suspect, who was taken into custody in the 9300 block of Country Club Drive. The vehicle used by the suspect was later found by Chicago Police Department officers in the 800 block of W Marquette and brought to Evergreen Park Police Station along with its occupants.

The investigation is ongoing. Authorities have asked anyone with information to contact the Evergreen Park Police Department at 708-422-2144.

An update released on October 16 states: "On 10/16/2025 the Cook County States Attorney reviewed this case and a charge of Attempted Murder was approved against 20-year-old Yoseph K Barnes of the 5400 block of S Indiana, Chicago, with further charges pending indictment. Barnes is scheduled to appear at Bridgeview Courthouse 10/17/2025 for arraignment."
