Park Forest School District 163 students suspended 487 times in a single school year

Park Forest School District 163 reported 487 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 487 students during the year. That equates to 25.7 percent of the 1,892 students enrolled.

Of the 25 in-school suspensions, all of whom were elementary or middle schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 24 incidents. There were one incidents of violence that caused physical injury. For 16 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 462 out-of-school suspensions, 329 were given to boys and 133 were given to girls, all of whom were elementary or middle schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 453 incidents. There were five incidents of a dangerous weapon, other than a firearm. For 190 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.
