Matteson Elementary School District 162 students suspended 293 times in a single school year

Matteson Elementary School District 162 reported 293 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 293 students during the year. That equates to 10.9 percent of the 2,699 students enrolled.

Of the 20 in-school suspensions, all of whom were elementary or middle schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 20 incidents. For 16 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 273 out-of-school suspensions, 175 were given to boys and 98 were given to girls, all of whom were elementary or middle schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 265 incidents. There were five incidents of violence without physical injury. For 133 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.
