Kirby School District 140 students suspended 79 times in a single school year

Kirby School District 140 reported 79 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 79 students during the year. That equates to 2.2 percent of the 3,638 students enrolled.

Of the 62 in-school suspensions, all of whom were elementary or middle schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 43 incidents. There were 17 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 52 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 17 out-of-school suspensions, all were given to boys, all of whom were elementary or middle schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 10 incidents. There were four incidents of violence that caused physical injury. For eight incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.
