The price of local government in 2017: City of Blue Island

The City of Blue Island budget was $37.01 million for its 2017 fiscal year, or $6,485 per household.

That's an increase of 10 percent from 2015, when the city spent $33.63 million, or $5,893 per household.

Blue Island has 5,707 households and a population of 23,401.

Since 2002, the City of Blue Island budget has grown by 4.3 percent, from $35.50 million. The city population has grown 13.7 percent over the same period, from 20,585.

Salaries accounted for 24 percent of city spending in 2017. Blue Island property taxpayers paid $8.87 million for 100 full-time employees and 70 part-time employees.

In 2002, the city had 141 full-time employees and 190 part-time employees, and spent $10.31 million.
