City of Oak Forest issued the following announcement on May 28.
Earlier this year, the City Council approved newly-updated temporary sign regulations. These changes were driven by a need to comply with new a legal precedent established by the United State Supreme Court while also seizing the opportunity to adopt a holistic plan that balances the need to allow advertising, promote safety and maintain the beauty of our community.
Temporary signage will now be regulated by zoning district. This letter addresses commercial and other non-residential areas such as governmental and religious facilities. The City’s primary objective for these districts is to continue allowing opportunities for businesses and organizations to advertise while improving the quality and effectiveness of the signs that are used.
Most temporary signs in non-residential areas require a permit allowing their display for 30 days. Smaller yard/pin signs are exempt from permits, but are restricted in number. It should be noted all signs are required to be posted on private property and not on the public right-of-way. This requirement has not changed and compliance is required to assure motorist and pedestrian safety.
To assist with this transition, the City Council has waived permit fees associated with these signs for the rest of 2019. I encourage you to consult the Temporary Sign Guidelines and Permit Application to familiarize yourself with the updated regulations. If you already have or are in need of temporary signs, you may apply for the appropriate permit or remove the signs that are no longer compliant.
