The Village of Park Forest has announced the opening of its wait list for the second round of the Home Repair and Accessibility Program (HRAP), which is funded by the Illinois Housing Development Authority. The initiative aims to assist eligible homeowners with critical repairs, accessibility improvements, and roof replacements.
Applications will be accepted in person at Village Hall on October 7 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., following a first-come, first-served process. Officials clarified that pre-applications sent by mail, email, or drop-off will not be considered.
HRAP is managed in partnership with Rebuilding Together Metro Chicago and offers forgivable loans. Homeowners may receive up to $25,000 for roof repairs or replacements and up to $50,000 for full rehabilitations or accessibility projects. The loans are forgiven over a period of three to five years depending on the scope of work.
To qualify, applicants must own and live in a single-family home in Park Forest as their primary residence. There are income restrictions; preference is given to households earning at or below 50% of the area median income, while overall eligibility extends up to 80% of that figure.
Eligible repairs include roof replacements and major work such as plumbing, electrical, or HVAC system updates. Accessibility modifications like ramps, wider doorways, and bathroom safety upgrades are also covered. Some accessibility projects may be available for owner-occupied rental properties.
Andrew Brown, assistant director of Economic Development and Planning, stated: “HRAP is about more than home repairs — it’s about keeping Park Forest families in place, protecting our housing stock and ensuring our residents can live safely and comfortably for years to come.”
An informational open house was held on September 30 at Village Hall to provide details about the program and application procedures.
