City of Palos Heights Recreation Board met June 11.

Here is the minutes provided by the board:

CALL TO ORDER

Chairman Key called the regular meeting of the Recreation Committee to order at 7:00 p.m. at the Palos Heights City Hall, 7607 W. College Drive. In attendance were Chairman Key, Alderman Bylut, Alderman Clifford, Alderman McGovern, Recreation Director Matt Fairbanks, and Recording Secretary Margaret Carey.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Chairman Key moved to approve the minutes of the May 14, 2019 meeting as written, seconded by Alderman McGovern. All in favor. Motion carried.

PUBLIC COMMENT – none.

LAKE KATHERINE REPORT

Chairman Key provided the Lake Katherine update:

 “Brews & Bullfrogs” is scheduled for tomorrow, but will probably be moved inside due to rain.

 Green Hills Library planting took place last week.

 The wettest May on record has resulted in prolific growth and we are starting to catch up on mowing and landscaping. The hard winter resulted in some plants dying off completely, which we are now removing.

 The “Cal Sag Bike Ride” was canceled due to thunderstorms.

 “Family Fishing Day” had about 60 attendees.

 NICOR volunteers planted approximately $1,500 worth of trees and bushes.

 Cummins work group helped with planting and trenching some areas with standing water.

 CPR/AED training is almost complete for all staff. They are recertified every 2 years.

 Canoe/Kayak season began and will continue until Columbus Day.

PARKS & RECREATION REPORT

Recreation Director, Matt Fairbanks, provided the Parks & Recreation update:

 Pool deck concrete project – Completion of the project was tabled until early fall due to the rain. We decided it was the best strategy in order to have the pool opened on time. There is a small patch of concrete that will need to be removed and replaced to complete the project.

 Update on OSLAD Grant / Palmer Park – The signed grant agreement was sent to Springfield on May 30th. This is a 2-year agreement. A 50% down payment will be issued upfront to the City and is expected in November. This project could be completed by the end of 2020.

 Update on new property purchased – We never received a proposal from Batistich Architects, so we reached out to Wight & Co and should receive the proposal by next week. We are seeking options for the barn structure.

 Meyers Park sign ceremony – The sign was installed today. Flowers and mulch will be placed around the sign. Invitations have gone out for the ceremony to be held on June 28 at 11am. Alderman Bylut suggested invitations be sent to the Women’s Club.

 Parks and Recreation Master Plan – We received additions from Ken Busse and Teska. The Master Plan will be reviewed by Planning & Zoning.

 CAPRA accreditation – Met with the Recreation Advisory Board on June 4th. We reviewed the accreditation standards and past packages that we had sent. We are still on track to complete by January.

NEW BUSINESS

1. Request to approve Engineer’s Pay Estimate #2 for Country Landscape & Supply in the amount of $29,411.45 for work completed on the Pool Deck project.

Chairman Key motioned to approve the pay estimate as described, seconded by Alderman Bylut. All in favor. Motion carried.
