Village of Tinley Park issued the following announcement on Nov. 22.

Gather the family and head to Downtown Tinley from Dec. 6 to 8 for the Village’s annual Holiday Happenings event featuring parades, live music, shopping, photos with Santa Claus and much more!

The weekend will kick off with the Community Tree-Lighting Ceremony at 6:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6 in Zabrocki Plaza, 17375 S. Oak Park Ave. Arrive early at 5:30 p.m. for a community sing-a-long to holiday music featuring professional carolers that harken back to the turn-of-the-century!

Visitors will be able to shop for unique holiday designs and creations while enjoying live music by local groups and entertainers at the Holiday Market, which will run the entire weekend inside a large, heated tent in the north parking lot at the Metra train station near 173rd Place and Oak Park Avenue. The market will be open from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6 and 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7 and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8.

Other family activities will include face painting, cookie decorating and writing letters to soldiers. Across the street at the Tinley Park Historical Society, 6727 W. 174th St., families can make their very own stuffed animal at the Teddy Bear Workshop, make goody bags for soldiers, take old-fashioned photos and have tasty treats! The Historical Society will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. Dec. 7 and 8.

The Clauses will officially arrive immediately following the Tinley Toyland Parade, which steps off at 11:45 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7 from 175th Street and marches north down Oak Park Avenue to North Street. Children are encouraged to bring an unwrapped toy for Together We Cope; the collection center will be located by the Holiday Market.

Children will be able to join Santa for a visit and photos from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7 and Sunday, Dec. 8 at the Oak Park Avenue train station. Visitors are encouraged to bring a nonperishable food item for the Tinley Park Food Pantry. Tickets for complimentary photos will be distributed until 3:30 p.m.

Santa Claus will help close out the festivities during the annual Parade of Lights at 5 p.m. Dec. 8. The parade begins at 177th Street and proceeds north down Oak Park Avenue. Come out to see festive floats and vehicles gleaming with holiday lights and featuring local businesses and community groups displaying the spirit of the season.

Other activities will include old-fashioned carriage rides on Dec. 7 and 8; an ice-carving demonstration at 2 p.m. Dec. 7 in Zabrocki Plaza; a carousel ride from noon to 5 p.m. Dec. 7 and 8; and a Trains and Miniatures show from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 7 and noon to 4 p.m. Dec. 8 at the Vogt Visual Arts Center, 17420 S. 67th Court.
