Chicago Heights School District 170 Board of Education met March 9.

Here is the minutes provided by the board:

Upon roll call, those present were: Member Castanon

Member Cordes

Member Karwowski

Member DiGiovanni

Those absent were: Member Nevarez

President Costello

Denise Lira, Tracy Sundwall, Karen Brennan, Katie Kollross, Kevin Angell and Dan Petrarca were present. Katie Kollross, AFT, Local 604 representative provided the Board with copies of Public Act 101-0620. She wanted to ensure the Board was completely aware of the amendments made by the State of Illinois.

1. Boys played their last volleyball game at Jerry Colangelo gym winning the conference. This was the last scheduled event in the Colangelo Gym as our student athletes will be attending Chicago Heights Middle School next year where all of the indoor athletic games will be hosted.

2. The girls volleyball is still competing with area middle schools. Band, art club and chess club continue after school at Washington McKinley School.

3. There is District Institute Day scheduled for March 17. Students are not in session.

4. The Fine Arts Festival will be hosted at Washington McKinley School on April 8th. Local middle schools showcase their school choirs and art work. We invite you to attend so you can see the performances and art work of our talented students.

A. Assistant Superintendent, CSBO Laretta Adams advised the Board that the Buildings and Grounds report was provided to them in an attachment.

B. Assistant Superintendent, CSBO Laretta Adams advised the Board that the January 2020 Treasurer’s Report was provided to them in an attachment.

C. Assistant Superintendent, CSBO Laretta Adams informed the Board of a FOIA received from the Illinois Retired Teacher Association for a list of this year's retirees and their email addresses.

D. Dan Petrarca, Project Manager, Grilli Construction updated the Board on the QSCB Summary and general progress of the Chicago Heights Middle School Construction.

E. Assistant Superintendent Mary Kay Entsminger updated the Board on the professional development being provided to staff.

F. Assistant Superintendent Mary Kay Entsminger advised the Board of the professional development that would be provided to staff on the March 17, 2020 professional development day. She invited the Board to stop and see some of the District 170 presenters.

G. Superintendent Thomas Amadio informed the Board of the receipt of a letter from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency stating that the building site of the Chicago Heights Middle School has been declared safe.

H. Superintendent Thomas Amadio discussed with the Board the date and time for a ribbon cutting ceremony for the Chicago Heights Middle School. The date and time of August 12, 2020, noon has been suggested but not confirmed. Superintendent encouraged the Board to consider the date and time and get back to him with their input.

Member DiGiovanni brought up concerns regarding the Coronavirus as well as general influenza spread in our schools. She suggested that temperatures in buildings should be lowered and that hygiene be emphasized to students. Superintendent Amadio provided the Board with a parent letter regarding student illness that had been sent home. Superintendent Amadio also provided the Board with a memo sent to all custodians regarding disinfecting all touch points in the Buildings and the Education-Related Guidance for Illinois Schools and School Districts regarding

Coronavirus/COVID-19 sent out by Illinois State Board of Education. Assistant Superintendent, CSBO Larett Adams shared with the Board that the District Custodians will be trained on a stronger disinfectant that will be provided.
