Blue Island FD responds to 52 fires in 2018

Blue Island Fire District responded to 239 calls in 2018 - 13.1 percent less than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Blue Island included 52 fires - 23 structure fires, 12 vehicle fires and 17 other fires.

In all, the department saw $7,943,050 in fire loss - or about $152,751 per fire.

The department also received 187 false calls, including one malicious call and 186 other false calls.

Two fire service members were injured in fire-related incidents and two were injured in non fire-related incidents.

The Blue Island Firefighters Pension Fund, which has 25 active employees and 36 retired or inactive employees, was $733,989 in debt as of December 2017, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $10,486 for every fire in 2017.
