Homewood FD responds to 85 fires in 2018

Homewood Fire District responded to 365 calls in 2018 - 9.6 percent more than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Homewood included 85 fires - 57 structure fires, 11 vehicle fires and 17 other fires. The fire department also responded to two calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $574,450 in fire loss - or about $6,758 per fire.

The department also received 278 false calls, including 13 malicious calls and 265 other false calls.

The calls resulted in one civilian fire-related injury. Additionally, one fire service member was injured in fire-related incidents and one was injured in non fire-related incidents.

The Homewood Firefighters Pension Fund, which has 17 active employees and 14 retired or inactive employees, was $661,609 positive as of April 2017, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $8,705 for every fire in 2017.
