City of Palos Heights Public Arts Commission met Aug. 26.
Here is the minutes provided by the commission:
I. Call to Order: 7:20pm. Attendance: Lynda Schiappa, Kathy Peters, Maria DeCaprio-Sunta, & Vanessa Sunta. Meeting was conducted on Facetime.
II. Approval of Minutes - All in favor.
III. Old Business:
A. New Mural Lighting - Committee agreed unanimously that we would like to install goose neck lighting in a black finish to match the Treasures of PH Mural & stay consistent. Maria will connect with Adam at Public Works on our decision and will provide sources if necessary. Vanessa to check on PH playbook to confirm publicity and will reach out to Margaret at the city hall for website presence to promote new mural as well as social media. Maria to create a blurb for the regional and submit photo.
B. Treasures of Palos Tile Repairs - Committee needs update as to where artist, Anne Farley-Gaines, is with current tile repair status. Lynda to follow up this week. In agreement to finish tile repairs before winter and would like to see a tile proof/test of one tile prior to creating all pieces.
C. Approval of Bills - Maria motions to approve invoice from Gamma Imaging in the amount of $3,988.30 for five vinyl banners for the Sporting Life of PH mural. Vanessa seconds. Motion carried.
IV. New Business:
A. Sporting Life in Palos Heights Mural - New mural panels are ordered and will be installed by Gamma Imaging the next week of 9.1.2020. Maria to supervise. Lynda requested that the invoice from the original install to do a price comparison. Maria will follow up with Doug at Gamma to discuss the installation cost.
V. Public Comment: N/A VI. Miscellaneous:
A. New Public Art: Discussion of a kid-friendly piece — possibly a colorful, group bench for children to utilize. Maria to send various inspiration links post meeting and team will research possible locations if we decide to move forward.
B. Pandemic: Maria, Kathy and Vanessa brainstormed as ways to reach out to the community highlighting the arts. It is quite evident how the arts are helping people get through this challenging time. Committee discussed a public forum of how people could share and post creativity durning these times. I.E. COVID-19 Arts Calendar, Stay
C. Connected in 2020, Best of 2020, etc. Community can add various mediums of creativity and follow along with others - i.e. dance, cooking, arts, music, exercise, photography, sculpture, etc. Vanessa to research the platform and technical side of how to make this work. Committee will meet mid-September to touch base on brainstorming efforts and aim toward the launch date of October 1st.
VII. Adjournment: 8:12 pm - Lynda motioned, Vanessa seconded. Next meeting: September 14, 2020 - 7pm.
