Brian Morrison wouldn’t change much about the 21 years he spent turning the Olympia Fields Country Club into one of the premier venues in the country.
“I have accomplished everything I set out to do at Olympia Fields,” Morrison told the South Cook News after recently announcing he plans to retire as director of golf at the end of the year. “I would say my most cherished memory is my relationship with my members. At a club like Olympia Fields, it’s all about the members.”
Over the last two decades, Morrison took every precaution to make sure things stayed that way. He leaves Olympia Fields feeling as if he is now “good friends” with all the members.
Morrison first came to Olympia Fields in 2001 after being awarded his first Head Golf Professional position nearly a decade before in 1982. Once his retirement becomes official, Morrison said he and his wife will be living in Florida, though they plan to spend summers in Chicago.
After all these years of being part of the mix, Morrison said he just feels now is the right time to walk away.
“I turned 68 last week,” he said. “My three kids are grown up and living and working on their own and I have been a golf professional since 1975. It’s time to turn the page.”
In saying his final goodbyes, Morrison made a point of showing his gratitude.
“I would be remiss if I did not thank the three remaining members of the search committee that took a chance on me in December of 2000 to take their golf program to the next level,” he said. “Bob Austin, Art Kelly and Larry Meyers: thank you; you changed my life forever.”
