Basketball fans can recognize greatness when they see it on the court. For the past two seasons, fans of South Suburban Conference Red girls basketball action have seen that greatness each and every game in Oak Lawn Community High School senior Mia Kennelly.
Last week, it became official as Kennelly was named as the SSC Red Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. This year was even sweeter as the team also found great success with an undefeated 13-0 conference championship.
“It has been an honor to be Mia’s coach these past four years,” head coach Mark Sevedge said. “She has been one of the hardest workers this program has had in a long time. Mia is the perfect example of what we want our players to be. She is a tireless worker, which has resulted in her being named a two-time SSC Red Player of the Year, but more importantly a back-to-back conference champion. I am going to miss Mia greatly, but I am so excited to see her play at the next level.”
In conference games this year, Kennelly averaged 15.6 points per game, shooting at a 47-percent rate. She added 6.9 rebounds per game and added four assists, and 3.6 steals a game. Her season totals were 409 points, 50 three-point baskets, 99 assists, 187 rebounds, and 103 steals. Her 2021 totals were 12.1 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 2.2 steals per game. She shot 46 percent from the field.
As a four-year varsity player, with her sophomore season shortened to 16 games due to a knee injury and her junior season shortened because of a pandemic, Kennelly’s overall record in games she has played at Oak Lawn is 63-27 overall and 40-8 in the SSC.
Kennelly wasn’t the only Spartan hooper to be recognized by the SSC. Juniors Kate Dillon, Rose Savaglio, and Shatha Abdeljaber were all named as all-conference players.
