A Chicago Police Department officer remains in the hospital in serious, but stable condition after she was shot while trying to conduct a traffic stop in West Englewood during the early evening hours of June 1.
Illinois State Rep. Brad Stephens (R-Rosemont) asked for his constituents to pray for the officer as she continues to heal from her injuries.
"Please keep the Chicago police officer who was shot in the line of duty last night in your prayers for her recovery," Stephens wrote in a June 2 Facebook post. "I send my support to our police as they work to hold the shooter accountable."
According to NBC 5 Chicago, after the vehicle the officer tried to pull over took off, the suspects pulled up next to the police cruiser and opened fire. Bullet fragments hit the police officer in the head and she also suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder. She was taken to the hospital by her partner, but the suspects took off and ran from the vehicle after crashing it. They remain at large.
Last year, 76 Chicago police officers were shot or shot at, Fox News reported. During a press conference at the end of the year, Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown told reporters every day is different for law enforcement who do the most they can to help the city.
According to data from the Chicago Police Department, as of May 29 there have been 232 murders, 952 shooting incidents, 826 criminal sexual assaults, 3,158 robberies, 2,167 aggravated batteries, 2,810 burglaries, 6,577 thefts and 5,128 motor vehicle thefts reported in the city in 2022.
