Keith Pekau’s victory at the polls garnered him the Republican nomination to represent Illinois' 6th congressional district.
“This race in November is going to garner national attention and I’m ready to show Republicans they made the right choice in nominating me to be the common-sense leader to defeat the failed far-left here in the 6th district and help win back the House,” Pekau wrote on Facebook.
Ballotpedia reported that Pekau will face Incumbent Sean Casten in the upcoming Nov. 8 election.
Pekau said in another Facebook post: “Thank you, Illinois-06 Republicans, for a decisive victory last night. Now it's on to November. With your continued support, we will flip Illinois-06 and retire Nancy Pelosi once and for all!"
Shaw Local reported that Pekau would focus on making abortions “as rare” as possible.
“I want to work on making the process of making adoption the preferred option, make it easier and more affordable so that the average American can afford to make that choice,” Pekau said to Shaw Local before Politico published the United States Supreme Court opinion to overturn Roe v Wade.
Pekau secured 38.5% of the GOP vote in Tuesday's primary election, defeating Gary Grasso, Niki Conforti, Catherine O'Shea, Scott Kaspar and Robert Cruz, NPR reported. Casten defeated Marie Newman and Charles Hughes to win the Democratic nomination for Illinois' 6th congressional district.
Pekau told the Daily Herald he believes the U.S. needs to look into cleaner ways to burn coal, among other energy ideas.
The main focus of Pekau's campaign was fighting against rising crime in Chicago's suburbs, NBC Chicago reported. Casten, who is seeking his third term, said in a statement, “Tonight, the people of the 6th district sent a resounding message. We have been given a mandate to continue our fight against the climate crisis, to end gun violence, to lower costs for families and to protect every woman’s right to make her own health care decisions.”
