City of Palos Heights Public Arts Commission met Oct. 11.

Here is the minutes provided by the commission:

1. Meeting of the Public Arts Commission Called to order at 7;15 pm. Present were Maria DeCaprio-Sunta, Sue DeKoker, Lynda Schiappa, Kathy Peter and Vanessa Sunta. Meeting was held via FaceTime

2. Approval of Minutes 

a. L. Schiappa motioned to approve the September minutes. Seconded by V. Sunta. Motion carried.

3. Old Business 

a. Sculpture Maintenance - The commission reviewed each sculpture and mural and discussed the type of maintenance needed. This ranges from painting, cleaning to landscaping. Sue DeKoker prepared a detailed spreadsheet with all the necessary information and it will be submitted to Public Works so areas of responsibility are defined.

Maria painted Coneflower and Wire Hand as both pieces were chipped and faded. She also cleaned the two Cranes and scrubbed all the copper plates. so they are readable again. She also washed Butterfly Girl and the Art Garden signage. These were recorded in the maintenance spreadsheet along with various paints that were used for future reference.

b. Lights in the Heights - PAC discussed additional ways the display will be improved this year to attract more residents:

i. A sign will be added on 76th Street with a banner and light to direct visitors to the parking lot, Vanessa will contact Opinize to order a plastic banner that will be fixed to the sign.

ii. Not Your Mama’s Trailer will be onsite on specific dates selling hot beverages, cookies and specialty nuts. There is no cost to Public Arts as the vendor will make money by selling her products.

iii. Music has been scheduled for Dec. 3 provided by Shepard High School Singers called Supernova.

iv. Public Arts will purchasing two sets of 16 ft long x 7 ft high metal arches that will be installed by Public Works on the sidewalk leading to the gazebo. Public Arts will be responsible for installing the lights on the arches.

v. Public Arts will be purchasing to two sets of 3 light-up ornaments which will be installed by the sidewalk. L Schiappa motioned to purchase the ornaments and V. Sunta second. Motion carried. Kathy Peters will do a diagram and measure the actual area.

vi. Extra effort will be made to publicize the Lights in the Heights and Vanessa will revise the graphic to feature the additional attractions. Maria will contact city hall to get information into the online newsletter, electronic sign and Parks & Rec Ctr.

c. Storybook Garden - The Southtown Tribune writer, Janice Newman, interviewed Maria about the Lake Katherine installation of “Little Turtle Gets Lost” by Jean Gnap, She wrote informative article with photos about the project. Sue will obtain a hard copy of the article for Maria’s files. Maria inspected the installation and is happy to report the wood panels are in good condition. Public Works will take them down November 1 and store them in the city garage.

d. Approval of the Bills - K Peters motioned to approve a receipt for $8 for expenditure of paint that Maria used to repaint the Wire Hand sculpture in the Art Garden. S. DeKoker seconded. Motion carried

IV. New Business 

a. Passport Marketing Piece - to be worked on in 2023. Vanessa will design the piece. 

b. Art Garden Addition - PAC discussed the idea of having a new metal base created by JJ Schiappa which the ceramic globe would be mounted. The globe has been in storage at Public Works and was done many years ago by Ann Gaines. It would be installed in a open blank area in the Art Garden. The only costs would be the creation of the base.

c. 2023 - Ideas for next year are:

- Passport Marketing Piece

- Possible mural on side wall of Pete’s Market to come on -127th & Ridgeland Avenue - Sculpture Bus Tour (Spring)

- Plastic outdoor screening for the Art Garden to hide power plants devices. Installation would be on outside of existing ComEd fence.

VI. Adjournment - L. Schiappa motioned to adjourn at 9:00 p.m. and V. Sunta seconded. Motion carried.
