GSU COMEBACK FROM 22 DOWN IN FIRST HALF, JAGS FALL 78-74 IN CCAC POST-SEASON TOURNAMENT

Governors State University came all the way back from 22 points down in the first half and the comeback fell short losing 78-74 at #2 seed Saint Xavier University Tuesday night in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference post-season tournament.

GSU trailed 43-21 with 2:45 remaining in the first half and Saint Xavier was lighting up the scoreboard hitting 20-33 field goals (60.5%) in the opening twenty minutes taking a 45-30 lead into halftime.

The Cougars (23-6, 16-4) were still leading by 18 (55-37) with 15 minutes remaining in the game before the Jaguars kept battling and kept fighting including a 13-0 run as part of a 19-4 run.

Adam Taylor hit a jumper to put GSU within two points 69-67 with 6:17 left in the contest. The furious GSU come backs included 11 team steals in the game (4 by Kyle Jackson) and Tai Walters-Whitaker continued his outstanding play with a game-high 23 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds and 3 steals.

The GSU defense forced Saint Xavier into 17 turnovers and the Jaguars scored 25 points off turnovers, many of them in the second half.

"We fought hard, I am so proud. We never like losing but to get down by 22 and to cut it down and wind up losing by four is just a testament to how tough our kids are.and how they wanted to fight," said GSU Head Coach Tony Bates.

"We've got everybody coming back next year but Adam (Taylor), so we look forward to getting better and doing some special things in the CCAC next year."

The Jaguars #7 seed, (9-20) did continue to battle in the contest and it was the final career game for GSU senior Adam Taylor who scored 15 points, had six rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Jalen Levy scored 17 points hitting 6-11 field goals and had six rebounds and a steal in 32 minutes played.

Nick Mikash had a team-high nine rebounds and scored seven points.  Tyler Clarke played solid scoring six points, two rebounds in 15 minutes off the bench for the Jags'.
