Analysis: South Cook townships were biggest suburban backers of Kim Foxx in 2020

Outgoing Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx won just eight of 30 suburban Cook County townships in the 2020 Democrat primary, and five of them were in South Cook County.

Foxx, of Flossmoor, won by large margins in Rich (79 percent of vote), Thornton (78 percent), Calumet (76 percent), Bloom (68 percent) and Bremen (56 percent) townships, according to a review of Cook County election results.

She didn't perform as well in South Cook County in 2020 as in 2016, receiving 28,252 fewer votes, a five percentage point difference region-wide.

The five townships accounted for 59,149 of Foxx's 163,109 total suburban Cook County votes, or 36 percent of the total.

She carried the five by 36,656 votes over her three challengers, Bill Conway, Donna More and Bob Fioretti.

County-wide, Foxx won 43 percent of the vote in the 2020 Democrat primary. Her opponents combined for 57 percent of the vote.

Foxx lost Worth (32 percent), Palos (25 percent), Orland (21 percent) and Lemont (16 percent) townships.

Lemont Township was Foxx's worst in all of Cook County. She won just 528 votes there to Conway's 1,878 and More's 522.

4,311 vote margin in 2020

Foxx won 43 percent of the suburban Cook County vote in the 2020 Democrat primary. Her opponents combined for 57 percent of the vote.

She won 31 percent of North Cook County townships and 40 percent of West Cook townships.

Foxx won the 2020 City of Chicago Democrat primary with 284,955 votes (55 percent) to Conway's 142,175 (28 percent), More's 62,333 (12 percent) and Fioretti's 25,142 (five percent). 

"Not Foxx" garnered 229,650 votes in the 2020 City of Chicago Democrat primary.

All told, Foxx won the 2020 Democrat primary with 447,974 votes to 443,663 votes for her three opponents, a difference of 4,311.

This was a contrast from 2016, when Foxx routed incumbent Anita Alvarez in the Democrat primary, winning 645,738 votes to Alvarez' 317,594 and 144,063 for More.

Foxx won 58 percent of 1,107,395 votes cast in 2016.

She won the City of Chicago with 415,627 votes (62 percent) to Alvarez' 171,882 (26 percent) and More's 79,073 (11 percent). 

Foxx also won suburban Cook County in 2016, receiving 230,111 votes (52 percent) to Alvarez' 145,712 (33 percent and 64,990 (15 percent) for More.

Foxx is backing Clayton Harris in the March 19, 2024 Democrat primary against retired Illinois Appellate Court Judge Eileen O'Neill Burke.
