Illinois State House District 82 candidate Nicole La Ha Zwiercan stated, "High temperatures are expected across Illinois this week," as she shared a few tips to keep cool. She made this statement in a Facebook post on June 17.

"High temperatures are expected across Illinois this week," said La Ha Zwiercan, according to Facebook.

In her Facebook post, La Ha Zwiercan shared several safety tips, including wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing, avoiding overexertion and the sun, and drinking plenty of non-caffeinated, non-alcoholic drinks. She also provided a link to a webpage on extreme heat from Ready Illinois.

According to Ready Illinois, residents should know the difference between "heat wave," "excessive heat watch," "heat advisory," "excessive heat warning," and "heat index." The organization also suggests closely monitoring those who could be adversely affected by the heat, such as children and the elderly, and those requiring special care. Additionally, Ready Illinois advises that individuals without air conditioning or ways to cool down should visit cooling centers, public pools, and other air-conditioned locations for even a few hours each day.

In a June 17 article, the Chicago Sun-Times reported that temperatures aren’t expected to drop below 70 degrees Fahrenheit, even at night. The article noted that "the last time Chicago saw a seven-day streak of low temperatures above 70 degrees was in June 1933." Part of the issue is attributed to a heat dome that will trap hot air and prevent rain, coupled with a lack of strong winds in the upper atmosphere.

La Ha Zwiercan was recently appointed to fill the vacancy in the 82nd State House District following the resignation of John Egofske. On her appointment, La Ha expressed gratitude on Facebook and pledged to be a family-focused voice prioritizing safe neighborhoods, exceptional schools, and lower taxes. The appointment was announced by House Republican leaders who emphasized La Ha’s dedication to children and public safety.

La Ha’s current term representing House District 82 will end on January 8, 2025. The district covers Darien and Lemont in DuPage and Cook counties. Ballotpedia lists Democrat Suzanne Akhras as another candidate running to represent the district.
