City of Oak Forest Veterans Commission met June 20

Here is the agenda provided by the commission:

5. Old business:

• Joe checked with PD about burning flags and they will do it at the end of summer. In the interim Tom Ceska volunteered to burn the flags at the Barn he boards his horse Mokena. He has set a date of June 28 about 18:00.

• Veterans Commission will present Jim Watsons proclamation at his assisted living location in Crest Hill. Need to pick a date and time.

• Birthday signs I have received another birthday request.

• We post colors at the Senior Luncheon May 23.

▪ Also set up the missing man table at Park Place for luncheon then moved it to City Hall for Memorial Day.

• The flag deposit box emptied on Saturday May 18, 9:00 AM filled 15 more bags.

• Saturday May 25 place flags on Central and 159th streets for Memorial Day.

6. New business

• September of this year we will talk with PD / FD and Gaelic Park to see if we should move the event to Gaelic Park.

◦ Also planning needs to start in September.

• Department heads suggested we move the event off July 4th (busiest day for PD & FD departments and no one volunteering to work). Next year maybe Sunday July 6th.

7. Once around the Table

Planning for Independence Day 2024 (July 4th) picnic and concert at Park District Pavilion behind main Park District building.

▪ We have a plan to make lanyards for Operation Gratitude.

▪ We could include non-monetary/monetary donations to the Manteno Veterans home.

▪ We will schedule military vehicles around the area for display.

▪ Food vendors.

▪ Dennis confirmed with Jack Frost that they will attend.

▪ Tone Capone Taco truck, DA’s Deli, Emerald Cup Kelly Devine for coffee & smoothies, and Jack Frost.

▪ Nick V’s (Doug’s Dogs) canceled since fireworks won’t be on site of concert.

▪ Kenootz Pizza and Maiz & Barro’s Mexican restaurant maybe interested.

▪ Food vendors need to submit their State of Illinois sanitation certificate.

• Port-a-potties are needed at park rear parking area (3) and by Shooters’s Field (2), 2 handicapped accessible, 1 at each location, and 2 handwash station. Need to place order.

• Parking is available in front of the Park District, and wherever possible.

▪ The City Administrator suggested that people find parking on their own.

We don’t need to park cars or provide parking.

• Ronnie Rice is not available because he broke his wrist. Replacing Ronnie is Joe Cantafio Jade 50’s music band. Plays CCR rain songs plus.

Assignments

• Dennis Mitzner - Musical groups.

• Chris Adams - Hang Veterans Banners and American Flag on back of pavilion plus tarp for Free Byrd set-up.

• Dennis Mitzner - MC of the event.

• Ralph Chichester & Rich Wojotowicz – No Parking needed free to help other areas.

• Jim Pioth – Garbage pick-up.

• Everyone - Handout challenge coins, pens, luggage tags etc.
