City of Calumet City Council met Aug. 30

Here are the minutes provided by the council:

CALL TO ORDER The Special Meeting of the City Council was called to order at 6:12 p.m. by Mayor Jones. 

PRESENT 7 ALDERMEN: Navarrete, Wilson, Tillman, Williams, Gardner (6:21 p.m.), Patton, Smith 

ABSENT: 0 

ALDERMEN: None 

Also present were Mayor Jones, City Clerk Figgs, City Treasurer Tarka, Deputy Clerk I Jessica Coffee, City Attorney Katie Nagy, City Attorney Sterk. 

PUBLIC COMMENT: None 

Presentation Regarding Home Depot and Napleton Tax Appeals 

City Attorney Katie Nagy presented on a Resolution that would authorize Law Firm Ancel Glink to intervene in Property Tax Appeal Board (PTAB) 23-31290 and (PTAB) 23-33942. Home Depot which is PTAB 23-31290 has requested there be a property tax reassessment for over $100,000.00 which would affect the Taxing Bodies. The City of Calumet City would lose $35,624.00 in taxes. PTAB 23-33942 which is Napleton is also requesting a property tax reassessment for over $100,000.00 which would cause the City of Calumet City to lose $24,764.00 in taxes. 

Res.#1 Authorizing Intervention in Property Tax Appeal For Home Depot and Napleton 

Resolution authorizing intervention in property tax assessment appeals 23-31290 and 23-33942 before the Illinois Property Tax Appeal Board. 

Approval Of Resolution 

Alderman Williams moved seconded by Alderman Tillman to pass a Resolution authorizing intervention in property tax assessment appeals 23-31290 and 23-33942 before the Illinois Property Tax Appeal Board.

NAYS: 0 

ABSENT: 1

Alderman Navarrete Discussion

Alderman Navarrete commented regarding the addresses on this Special Meeting Agenda on August 30, 2024 are not the same addresses that were presented on the August 22, 2024 Regular City Council Meeting agenda.

Mayor Jones 

Mayor Jones confirmed that the addresses on tonight's agenda are different from the addresses that were on the Regular City Council Meeting agenda held on August 22, 2024; and that those previously approved motions would need to be amended to include (The demolition will be charged to the 2022 Bond proceeds) and that will appear on the September 12, 2024, Regular City Council Meeting agenda.

Approval for Payment to Holland Asphalt (Amended) 

Alderman Williams moved, seconded by Alderman Smith to direct the City Treasurer to remit payment to Holland Asphalt in the amount of $20,420.00 plus payment for Cook County Permit for the emergency demolition of property located at 107 Sibley due to a fire that created unsafe, unsanitary conditions. Charged to the 2022 Bond proceeds. (Amended)

Approval for Payment to Holland Asphalt (Amended) 

Alderman Williams moved, seconded by Alderman Smith to direct the City Treasurer to remit payment to Holland Asphalt in the amount of $13,800.00 plus $300.00 Cook County Permit for the emergency demolition of property located at 202-156th due to a fire that created unsafe, unsanitary conditions. Charged to the 2022 Bond proceeds. (Amended) 

Approval for Payment to Holland Asphalt (Amended) 

Alderman Williams moved, seconded by Alderman Smith to direct the City Treasurer to remit payment to Holland Asphalt in the amount of $17,200.00 plus $450.00 Cook County Permit for the emergency demolition of property located at 905-163rd St. due to a fire that created unsafe, unsanitary conditions. Charged to the 2022 Bond proceeds. (Amended)

Motion for Closed Session

Alderman Williams moved, seconded by Alderman Patton to enter into executive session at 6:40 p.m. for the purpose of pending and probable litigation and the employment of a specific individual.

The council met in executive session from 6:40 p.m. to 7:33 p.m.

Return to Regular Order Of Business 

Alderman Smith moved, seconded by Alderman Gardner to return to the regular order of business at 7:33 p.m.

Approve Payment to Law Offices of Anthony Bass 

Alderman Williams moved, seconded by Alderman Gardner to approve payment to Law Office of Anthony Bass, in the amount of $15,000.00 for Legal and Consulting Services dated July 20, 2024 - August 20, 2024, and direct the City Treasurer to remit payment from account #01025 - 52200. (hourly billing per ordinance and per city council direction).
