The inaugural Turkey and Meal Giveaway aimed to assist residents in underserved zip code areas, particularly those dealing with cancer diagnoses and food insecurity. The event involved over eight hours of preparation and resulted in the successful distribution of turkeys, side dishes, community resources, and non-perishable foods.
A total of 30 families, representing 82 individuals based on family size, were served during the giveaway. Most recipients came from the South Suburban Cook County area and lived in households with two or more people. Many expressed their gratitude for the assistance provided. One recipient remarked, “This is an amazing gesture, and the groceries were such a blessing.” Another commented, “This was a big help to my family,” while a third added, “I appreciate everything given to me and my family. I also love the stations at the offices, which have helped me throughout the years.”
The initiative underscored the significant impact of focused efforts to address food insecurity among those facing chronic health conditions.
Community members from underserved zip code areas received community resource materials along with approximately five different grocery items including turkey, stuffing, canned vegetables, mashed potatoes, and cornbread mix.
Volunteers for this event were provided by the Ingalls Edge Department and staff from outpatient oncology/hematology offices.
