John C. Hanlon Remembered as a Beloved Husband, Father, and Dedicated Community Member

John C. "Jack" Hanlon | Colonial Chapel Funeral Home & Crematory

John C. Hanlon, known affectionately as Jack, passed away at the age of 95 surrounded by his loving family in Tinley Park, IL. Born on December 25, 1929, in Chicago, IL, he is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Elizabeth (Betty), his brother Gerald (Marge), and his children Colleen (Len), Maureen (William), Michael (Joanne), and Therese (Ron). John is also survived by his 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents James and Anna Hanlon and his brother, James Hanlon.

A Korean conflict army veteran, John was a proud member of the American Legion Post 615 and dedicated 40 years of service to Commonwealth Edison, starting as a meter reader and retiring as a procedures analyst to explore the world through travel.

Throughout his life, John actively participated in various local organizations, including St. Christopher Church, St. James Hospital, Greenview Townhomes, and health and fitness programs. He was a skilled gardener, an avid reader, and enjoyed creative outlets like ceramics and cross-stitch.

Known for his love of socializing and dancing, John and Betty were devoted attendees at social functions, often taking the lead on the dance floor with their impressive Jitterbug skills. He had a zest for life, a love for learning new things, and a deep affection for his friends and "extended" family, the La La group. John's passing leaves a void in the hearts of many who cherished his warmth, energy, and infectious spirit.

Visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, January 23, 2025, from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Colonial Chapel in Orland Park, IL. The funeral service will be on Friday, January 24, 2025, starting at 9:15 a.m., leading to Mass at St. George Catholic Church in Tinley Park, IL, and interment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Alsip, IL.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the Salvation Army in John's honor.
