On January 28, 2025, a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to Kirby School District 140 by South Cook News. The request pertains to all emails and memos from the past year that contain the keywords "Lucy Calkins" and "Units of Study".

As part of our commitment to comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we at South Cook News believe in the importance of transparency and accountability in public institutions. Access to these records will aid us in fulfilling our professional responsibilities, which include providing essential information to the public.

The Illinois Freedom of Information Act, under which this request is made, allows for access to public records. We have requested these documents preferably in electronic format for ease of review and dissemination.

We have also sought a fee waiver for this request as a media organization involved in gathering and reporting news to the public.

According to the Illinois Report Card, the average state teacher salary in 2023 was $73,916, while the state average administrative salary was $116,908. The average student-to-administrative ratio stands at 141:1, with an average student-to-teacher ratio of 17:1. It's noteworthy that 58% of teachers in Illinois hold a master's degree or higher.

We await a response from Kirby School District 140 regarding our FOIA request and will continue to strive towards keeping our readers informed about local governmental affairs.
