Carlos Rios | Smits Deyoung-Vroegh Chapel - South Holland

Carlos Rios, age 23, of Posen, IL, passed away on Sunday, April 6, 2025. He was the loving son of Juan Carlos Ortega and the late Rierrma Rios, and the dear brother of Alex, Stephanie, Zane, Janell, and Erick. Carlos was the kind nephew of Raquel Rios, who was like a second mother to him, and the cherished uncle of Mason, Alexander, Kali, and Amelia (his goddaughter). He was also the godson/nephew of Ramon and Mary, and is survived by many loving aunts and cousins.

Born and raised in Harvey, IL, Carlos showed academic brilliance early on, standing out at Whittier Elementary and Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School. His commitment to excellence continued at Thornton Township High School, where he graduated third in his class. His love for animals inspired him to pursue a veterinary degree at Cornell University, where he graduated with a Bachelor's in Animal Science in 2024. Additionally, he was in the process of pursuing a nursing degree, displaying a deep-seated passion for helping others and spreading joy.

Carlos's eternal optimism, compassion, and willingness to go the extra mile left a lasting impact on everyone he encountered. His legacy of kindness and relentless optimism will be remembered by all who knew him. He will be deeply missed by those whose lives he touched.

A visitation will be held on Friday, April 25, 2025, from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Smits Funeral Home, 649 E. 162nd St. (Rt.6/159th St.) South Holland, IL. The Funeral Mass will take place on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Augustine Catholic Parish, 4130 147th St, Midlothian, IL.
