As autumn brings falling leaves to Park Forest, the Village’s Public Works Department is reminding residents not to rake or blow leaves into the street. The reminder comes as homeowners begin seasonal yard clean-up.

Nick Christie, assistant director of Public Works, explained that putting leaves in the street creates several issues. “When leaves collect in the streets, they can block storm drains, leading to localized flooding during rain events,” Christie said. “It also makes it more challenging for our crews to keep the streets clean and safe for drivers and pedestrians.”

Leaves on roadways can become slippery when wet, increasing risks for drivers and bicyclists. Additionally, decaying leaves that enter storm sewers can pollute local waterways.

Christie emphasized the importance of proper disposal: “We ask residents to use the Village’s yard waste collection program instead. Place leaves and other yard waste in compostable paper bags for pick-up on your regular collection day. It’s a straightforward step that helps protect our community.”

The Village also reminded residents that blowing or sweeping leaves into the street violates a local ordinance and could lead to fines. “Doing the right thing with your leaves keeps our neighborhoods looking clean and prevents bigger problems down the line,” Christie added.

Officials are urging residents to work together to keep streets clear this fall as winter approaches.
