Riverdale FD responds to 92 fires in 2017

Riverdale Fire Department responded to 288 calls in 2017 - 3.2 percent more than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Riverdale included 92 fires - 71 structure fires, nine vehicle fires and 12 other fires. The fire department also responded to three calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $461,850 in fire loss - or about $5,020 per fire.

The department also received 193 false calls, including 28 malicious calls and 165 other false calls.

The calls resulted in one civilian fire-related injury. Additionally, two fire service members were injured in fire-related incidents.

The Riverdale Firefighters Pension Fund, which has 16 active employees and 11 retired or inactive employees, was $405,073 in debt as of April 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $4,356 for every fire in 2016.
