Issued the following announcement on Oct. 11.
The International Emergency Economic Powers Act is commonly used by presidents to impose economic sanctions when they determine there is “any unusual and extraordinary threat.”
Congressmen Dan Lipinski (D-IL) and Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) released the following statement today:
“As Co-Chairs of the International Religious Freedom Caucus, we call on President Trump to impose economic sanctions against the government of Turkey for its military intervention in Syria. We stand united in rigorous opposition to these deplorable actions that are destabilizing the region. It is clear that the offensive is leading to civilian casualties, and we fear vulnerable ethnic and religious minorities will endure a disproportionate amount of the suffering. We do not have confidence that Turkey, where deteriorating religious freedoms have long concerned our Caucus, will provide the same protections for minorities including Christians and Yazidis in the region. Sanctions against Turkey will not only issue a severe punishment for its actions against our Kurdish allies, but also reinforces our commitment to protect religious freedom from persecution around the world.”
