The 2021-22 sports calendar saw a return to traditonal scheduling for GSU's sports teams and minimal interruptions during the fall, winter and spring campaigns.
Over the course of 245 days (from August 25 through April 26), a total of 118 student-athletes, representing nine teams, appeared in 148 athletic contests.
Highlights from 2021-22:
• Lenny Baumann became the first GSU male cross country runner to participate in the NAIA National Championships and the first to earn All-CCAC honors.
• Men's Soccer made its debut in the NAIA National Tournament, losing to second-ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan in the opening round.
• Men's Golf opened its season with a first-place finish at the Troll Classic, pulling away from the field by 23 strokes.
• Volleyball's Dunja Tatic became the first GSU student-athlete to receive All-CCAC honors four consecutive seasons. She demolished a school record with 34 kills against St. Ambrose.
• Sharnita Breeze became the second member of the 1,000-Point Club, finishing second on the team's career scoring list with 1,050 points.
• Goalkeeper Luis Ramirez earned NAIA Defensive Player of the Week honors three times during the season. His five POW awards are the most in school history.
• Women's golfer Sedona Smith set records for lowest scoring averages over a season (93.3) and career (95.4).
• Cross country captain Elizabeth Rios moved into first place on GSU's career list for race appearances (17).
• DeAndrey Robinson II became the first player in team history to earn All-CCAC honors three-straight seasons.
Men's Basketball
(10-19 overall, 7-15 CCAC, 12th place)
The Jaguars' schedule featured six teams that qualified for the NAIA Tournament, including No. 1 seed William Penn. GSU advanced to the championship game of the Jaguars Tip-Off Classic for the third-straight year and recorded impressive nonconference wins against Taylor and Cornerstone. DeAndrey Robinson set team records for rebounds in a game (18), season (251) and career (662), earning All-CCAC Second Team accolades.
Women's Basketball
(10-19 overall, 9-13 CCAC, 8th place)
Guard Cashay Dixon joined the team mid-way through the season and led the Jaguars with a 15.9 scoring average. She earned All-CCAC Honorable Mention as did Sharnita Breeze, who led the team in six statisticial categories. Governors State defeated Olivet Nazarene for the second-straight season and hosted its first-ever tournament—the Jaguars New Year's Classic.
Men's Cross Country
(11th place-CCAC Championships)
Lenny Baumann finished 149th overall, posting a time of 27:09.2 at the NAIA National Championships in Vancouver, Wash. He placed 10th overall at the CCAC Championships in his hometown of Bourbonnais. GSU's 10-man roster consisted of eight players from the Jaguar soccer team. Head Coach Kevin Kredens closed out his coaching career at GSU after seven seasons.
Women's Cross Country
(10th place-CCAC Championships)
Jacqueline Navarrete received team MVP honors after finishing as GSU's top runner at all six meets, highlighted by a PR of 21:46.60 at the Midwest Intercollegiate. Bailey Honn and Elizabeth Rios completed their third seasons with the team. GSU competed at one of the nation's largest meets—the 62-team Great Lakes Challenge in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Men's Golf
(9th place-CCAC Championships)
Anthony Accettura shot a 3-under-68 to claim medalist honors at the St. Francis Fall Invitational. Teammate Patrick Guilfoyle won the individual title at the Trolls Classic. Adam Taylor, a member of the Jaguar basketball team, joined the team in the spring and was the team's second-lowest scorer at the CCAC Championships.
Women's Golf
The Jaguars set a team record with a 106.5 scoring average. GSU posted a two-day score of 875 at the NCCAA North Central Regional, the second-best 36-hole score in team history. Sedona Smith recorded the highest finish for a Jaguar at the CCAC Championships, placing 21st overall. Her score of 188 was also a program record for that event.
Men's Soccer
(12-4-3 overall, 9-1-3 CCAC, 2nd place)
Governors State set program records for wins and conference wins finishing second in the CCAC Standings. Matt Eggert's squad advanced to the CCAC Tournament Championship Game for the second straight season. Martin Esquivel logged the first hat trick in team history. Six players were named to the All-CCAC teams, led by John Gonzalez's first team selection.
Women's Soccer
(6-10-0 overall, 5-8-0 CCAC, 9th place)
The Jaguars won a program-record six games, going a perfect 3-0 against schools from the IU system. GSU scored 10 goals against Calumet St. Joseph, its highest total ever. Zoie Langlois set an individual record with seven points in that contest. Eden Suda and Ursula Bravo earned CCAC Defensive Player of the Week awards.
Women's Volleyball
(6-16 overall, 5-13 CCAC, 9th place)
Governors State recorded 3-0 sweeps of Trinity Christian and arch-rival IU Northwest in University Park. Dunja Tatic was named to the Amber McClure Fayerweather Memorial All-Tournament Team. Jamie Skvarla set a team record with 50 assists versus Concordia (MI).
