Governors State scored two second-half goals to post a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over St. Francis Tuesday night at the Sportsplex. The Jaguars (4-3-4, 3-1-2 CCAC) have won three consecutive games and moved into sole possession of third place in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Association.
St. Francis (3-5-1, 1-3-0 CCAC) struck first when Sergio Hernandez-Ara and William Martinez found themselves on a two-on-one in the final third, resulting in Martinez's first goal of the season.
GSU answered with a goal of its own two minutes later at the 67:39 mark. Carlos Morales took a free kick and bent a low shot inside the far post for his third goal in as many games, his goals streak being one shy of the school record.
Pavel Valchev provided the game-winner at 74:51 with a golazo, a high-arching shot from 25 yards out that eluded out-stretched goalkeeper Sebastian Mireles. Mireles was seeing his first action of the season after starter Carson Heglund left in the first half because of injury.
The Jaguars applied pressure all night, finishing with a 29-9 count in total shots. Abraham Jaimes posted a team-high six shots while Morales led the team with three shots on goal.
"We found a way to win tonight and we're looking forward to having a bye this week before we take on Roosevelt in a tough match," said GSU Head Coach Matt Eggert.
The win improved GSU's all-time record on the Sportsplex Turf A pitch to 12-1-0.
Governors State continues its homestand on October 5, hosting Roosevelt at 8 p.m. in Crown Point.
