Governors State Men's Soccer (5-3-4, 4-1-2) began its week's play—landing in third place in the CCAC standings—with a 3-0 shutout verse Roosevelt University Wednesday night at the Sportsplex. Tonight's victory gives GSU its fourth consecutive win, aseason-high streak.
GSU set the tone tonight by playing an aggressive, high-pressure match against Roosevelt. Junior Juan Manuel Rodriguez's goal, assisted by Edgar Vargas in the 27th minute of the game gave the Jaguars the lead for the rest of the night.
GSU took full advantage of the Lakers having one less player on the field due to a player receiving a red card with 72:41 left on the clock. GSU's next two goals came in the last 14 minutes of play. Vargas assisted on an amazing header goal by Carlos Morales, followed by the last goal on the night by Bryan Villa at 82:31. Goal keeper Emigdio Tormo Lopez had his third shutout of the season and with four saves to keep the Lakers scoreless.
Head Coach Matt Eggert said, "We challenged the guys to put a full 90 minutes of pressure on Roosevelt and that is exactly what they did. Our job is to keep improving every game and keep the pressure in the of the CCAC".
GSU's (5-4-0, 4-2-0) will take the field Saturday afternoon on October 8th at 2:30 p.m. CT to face off with the Crimson Wave of Calumet St. Joe.
