The Chicago Ridge School District Board discussed the upcoming summer and 2023-24 school year during a recent meeting.

Online registration for the 2023-24 school year opened on Monday and is being performed through PowerSchool for the first time. The board is working to make the shift as smooth and user-friendly as possible for future years, aided by the fact that registration can be performed through phones and is available in the most common languages in the community, including Spanish and Arabic. The board also announced that registration fees remain unchanged from last year.

The 2023 summer school program is expected to resemble the 2022 program. Teachers will recommend students from their classes for the session based on their performance of specified foundational skills and abilities related to their subjects. Teachers are expected to finalize their recommendations in the coming weeks with parents and guardians being given invitations for their children.

Summer classes will begin on June 20 and school days will run from 8:15 a.m. to noon following feedback from teachers and families. The program aims to bring students up to satisfactory achievement levels in critical areas such as reading and math.

"We're looking forward to it. It's getting close." District Curriculum Director Megan Nothnangel said of the summer program. "We will use the same resources that we used last year that we purchased to support those predetermined areas, and we'll be developing with staff on Monday, staying a little bit later just to build up that understanding of the resources and how they can support that instruction."

The board had also previously announced that they have three vacancies and are accepting applications from interested parties until 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Two seats expire in April 2025 and the third expires in April 2027.

The Board will review applications and make final decisions in May, appointing the chosen candidates before the end of the month.
