Illinois State House District 36 candidate Christine Shanahan McGovern stated that "our legislatures want this sanctuary state to continue," while sharing information about a protest in New York. She made the statement in a July 28 Facebook post.
"I support immigration the legal way," said Shanahan McGovern, Cndidate, according to Facebook. "Our legislatures want this sanctuary state to continue. There is suppose to be another 25000 illegal immigrants coming to a city near you. This is a social issue every Illinois citizen can support."
In her Facebook post, Shanahan McGovern shared a link to a video from Facebook user Matt Couch, which purportedly showed protests over illegal immigration in New York. Couch wrote in the caption of his post, "JUST IN: New Yorkers have had enough of Biden/Harris and Democrats as THOUSANDS are marching from Brooklyn to Manhattan to protest illegal aliens invading their shelters and neighborhoods."

Shanahan McGovern’s statement continued in her own post. She wrote, "I think we should have an Illinois Citizens First event like NY did. Before my Progressive Liberal followers, of which there are plenty, attempt to say this is wrong I challenge them to say why we should continue to put so much funding into this forced economic disaster. I also challenge them to go help an American homeless person. Nothing is going to change if you keep voting the same."
In June, Shanahan McGovern organized an event called "Illinois Citizens First," according to a Facebook event page. The event was held at 3359 W 115th Street, in Merrionette Park. It had a $20 admission fee, a buffet, and cash bar; it focused on border security and "what to expect from this failed legislation," according to the Facebook event page.
