"FOCUSED" JAGUARS ROUT GOSHEN COLLEGE 80-46 IN GSU WINTER CLASSIC

GSU jumped out to a 24-6 first quarter lead shooting 61% from the field (11-18) and kept up the season-high scoring offense and tenacious defense to beat Goshern College 80-46.  The decisive win wrapped up day two of the 2022 GSU Winter Class at the ARC. 

The first ten minutes and throughout the contest was keyed by the Jaguars defense. "It all starts with our defense, doing everything with intention, said GSU Head Coach Tonishea Mack.

"We found our focus and I challenged the team to stay locked in. And it was good to see us hitting shots. We've got to stay true to what we've been doing and play to our strengths (defense). Everybody played well and contributed for us today."

Governors State (4-12. 2-6) put the clamps on Goshen from the get-go and limited the visitors to 27% shooting (15-55) in the ball game. In the first quarter GSU held Goshen to zero points in the final six minutes out-scoring the Maple Leafs 16-0 in that stretch to break the game wide open. The Jaguars utilized a 28-2 scoring run in the first and second quarters to pull away and hold Goshen (6-9, 1-4) to its season scoring low 46 points.

Along with the "D", GSU scored a season-high 80 points and had season bests in many offensive categories led by senior point guard Angelique Cowan with 18 points (7-14 FGs). Tabetha Jones scored 17 points (7-12 FGs) and added seven rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. In the game, the Jaguars shot a season-best 54.2% (32-59 FGs) and were 6-14 (42.9%) three-pointers.

Senior Lotte Miller had a solid game scoring 15 points on 6-9 shooting and led GSU with 8 assists and the team totaled 23 dimes on 32 made baskets in the convincing win.

GSU's Aaliyah Hull registered a double-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds and had 2 steals and 2 blocked shots. 

2023 CCAC action resumes in a hurry for the Jaguars playing at Saint Ambrose, Tuesday January 3, 530 CST tip in Davenport, Iowa. moving the women's game up one day before the men's conference game in Iowa the next day at the request of Saint Ambrose Athletics.

COWAN EARNS ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM GSU WINTER CLASSIC HONORS

Angelique Cowan scored 17 points in game one of the Classic vs. Williams Baptist University Thursday and added 18 points today to be named on the 2022 GSU Winter Classic All-Tournament team.

Goshen's Zion Neat (Sr. G, Austin, TX) also was named to the All-Tournament team, along with WBU's Sophomore G/F Kaylee Clark (Batesville, Arkansas) and Trinity Christian's Katarina Savic (Jr. G., Frankfort. IL).

In game one of the GSU Winter Classic today, Williams Baptist University (Arkansas) edged CCAC Trinity Christian College 74-69 in a game that featured each team with five players scoring in double figures. WBU was 2-0 in the tournament, GSU and Goshen 1-1 and Trinity 0-2.
