Franciscan Health Michigan City has provided emergency equipment backpacks and CPR gear to the LaPorte County Sheriff's Office, aiming to enhance the medical response capabilities of local law enforcement. The donation includes 70 large red backpacks, each designed to organize and consolidate various emergency response items that officers typically carry in their vehicles. Among the donated equipment are 100 Ambu bags, which are used to assist in administering CPR.
The backpacks will also contain automatic external defibrillators (AEDs), Narcan kits for treating drug overdoses, personal protective equipment such as gloves and masks, basic first aid supplies, and Stop the Bleed kits. By consolidating these items into a single backpack, officers can access essential tools more quickly during emergencies.
Sister M. Petra Nielsen, vice president of mission integration for Franciscan Health's Northern Indiana division, managed the purchase of the backpacks using funds from the Mission fund. "When they reached out to me, the decision to help was easy because there is such an important partnership between Franciscan and law enforcement," Nielsen said. "They are always there to help us and support us when we need them. These bags help support our Franciscan values of respect for life by helping these officers help others in need when seconds count."
All law enforcement vehicles in LaPorte County are now equipped with AEDs due to ongoing support from Franciscan Health in collaboration with Bolt for the Heart and the Play for Jake Foundation.
"You folks are incredible partners," said LaPorte County Sheriff's Office Administrative Captain Derek Allen. "We can't thank you enough for your generosity."
Franciscan Health Michigan City President and CEO Dean Mazzoni expressed appreciation for the Sheriff's Office, stating, "for all you do for our communities each and every day."
The Mission Fund receives support from donations to the Franciscan Health Foundation and proceeds from sales at the Franciscan Health Michigan City gift shop. Donations can be made online at https://www.franciscanhealthfoundation.org/ or by calling 219-661-3401.
