Park Forest officials are urging residents to get vaccinated against flu, COVID-19, and shingles ahead of the holiday season. In response to a rise in respiratory illnesses in the Chicago area, the Village of Park Forest’s Recreation, Parks, and Community Health Department is working with Osco Drug to host a Community Vaccination Clinic on Wednesday, Oct. 22. The clinic will take place at Village Hall from 10 a.m. to noon and will accept both HMO and PPO insurance.
Recreation Manager Adina McCollough emphasized the importance of early vaccination before increased travel and gatherings during the holidays. “This is our moment to act before the holidays, when gatherings and travel increase,” McCollough said. “Getting vaccinated now helps protect not only yourself, but also grandparents, children, and neighbors who may be more vulnerable.”
She noted that respiratory illness rates are climbing across Illinois. “Flu activity is already higher than it was at this time last year, and local hospitals are experiencing an increase in cases,” McCollough stated. “COVID-19 test positivity in Chicago recently climbed to more than 5 percent, the highest level since January. That’s why clinics like this one are so important in helping to slow the spread.”
McCollough added that vaccinations benefit everyone by reducing severe illness risks and protecting those who cannot receive certain vaccines due to medical reasons. By midday on Wednesday, dozens of residents had already attended the clinic.
“This is more than just a clinic—it’s a community safeguard,” McCollough said. “If we step up now, we give ourselves the best chance to enjoy the holidays safely and keep our community healthy.”
