Cost of college went up for all students at Prairie State College

In-state tuition and fees rose 8.9 percent for 2017-18 at Prairie State College, according to the latest disclosure from the U.S. Department of Education.

Illinois residents paid $9,162 to attend the two-year public institution this year $750 more than the $8,412 charged for 2016-17.

Non-residents paid 18.4 percent more than residents this year, or $10,848. Their price tag grew 8.8 percent from $9,972 in 2016-17.

About 93 percent of the school's undergraduate population are Illinois residents. About 6 percent are residents of other states and 1 percent are citizens of other countries.

Data shows 80 percent of full-time undergraduates who started school in 2015-16 received student financial aid in some form. In all, 154 students received grants or scholarships totaling $884,997 and 45 students took out student loans totaling more than $217,101.

Including all undergraduates, 2,272 students used grants or scholarships totaling $12.66 million. Another 869 took out $5.06 million in federal student loans.
