Cook County School District 130 students suspended 171 times in a single school year

Cook County School District 130 reported 171 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

The district transferred one students to another program instead of suspending or expelling them.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 171 students during the year. That equates to 4.6 percent of the 3,701 students enrolled.

Of the 122 in-school suspensions, 96 were given to boys and 26 were given to girls, all of whom were elementary or middle schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 67 incidents. There were 40 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 99 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 49 out-of-school suspensions, 36 were given to boys and 13 were given to girls, all of whom were elementary or middle schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for violence without physical injury. The category includes 17 incidents. There were 14 incidents of unspecified reasons. For 30 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.
